ICE FISHING

Being a guest at border View Lodge in the winter certainly has its perks. Nobody offers more. This winter we will be adding to our offerings with our own plowed road for Border View Lodge guests. The road will give you the opportunity to come and go as you please to one of our fish houses throughout the day.  We will continue to provide our full service packages in which we are known for, with floatable bomber transportation in our rigs that are unique to Lake of the Woods. The option is yours to choose at the same great prices.

The typical ice fishing season runs from early December through March. Our day houses are available for use from shortly after sun up until shortly before dark. The water in Lake of the Woods is stained, which provides the best opportunity for success while fishing during daylight hours. Throughout the winter, we’re constantly moving our fish houses. Guests can expect to fish anywhere from a couple miles to 25 miles out on Lake of the Woods. Our guides are on the ice every day, enabling us to follow the big schools of Walleye to keep guests on fish!

Border View Lodge also offers spacious sleeper houses with an open floor plan to give our guests plenty of space to fish comfortably. Our sleepers are readily accessible on our plowed road, giving you the opportunity to come and go as you please.

Lake of the Woods offers some phenomenal Northern Pike fishing as well. The best trophy Pike fishing is in late February and March. The reason being; the big females are feeding heavily and concentrated in shallow water as they get ready to spawn. We provide fish houses in prime Pike locations to stay warm while watching your flags. All tip-ups can be supplied at no additional charge.

Border View Lodge even offers pleasant heated porta-potties on the ice. Ladies, especially, appreciate that luxury!

If you’re planning a winter fishing getaway, look no further. Border View Lodge offers you the opportunity to have the best ice fishing experience Minnesota’s Walleye Capital of the World has to offer.

Commonly Asked Questions about ice fishing at Border View Lodge

Q: Does weather ever prevent you from allowing guests to fish?

A: There are certain instances where it’s simply not feasible to make it out fishing. These scenarios are rare. With unique capabilities for different lake access points and different modes of transportation, nobody can safely take care of you better than Border View Lodge.

Q: How far in advanced do you need to know if we will need transportation to a fish house or if we will be driving our own vehicle out on your plowed road?

A: You should let us know as soon as possible, preferably when you make your reservation, but certainly before you arrive. In a situation where the plowed road has to be closed during your stay, we can provide bomber transportation for all guests if conditions allow.

Q: When will the plowed road be open?

A: The road will be open to guests as soon as the ice is safe enough for everyone to travel on. On average, January 1 through early March allows for safe travel. However, every year is different. Prior to the road opening we will provide transportation for all guests in our light weight vehicles.

Q: How long do we fish?

A: Our day fish houses are available from shortly after day break until shortly before dark. Guests opting to drive out to one of our fish houses will have the opportunity to come and go as they please throughout the day.

Q: When do you take guests to the reefs?

A: Reef fishing on the north end of the lake usually picks up in February and March. The 20-25 mile bomber ride can provide fast and furious action, but it is certainly not always the case as every year is different.  Our guides are in tune with the bite all over the lake and do scout out new areas throughout the winter. We let the fish do the talking when it comes to moving our fish houses.

Q: Do you provide rods & reels?

A: We do not provide ice fishing rods & reels. However, we do have jig rods for sale in the gift shop. Some are as cheap as $4 and come with line, a jig, and a bobber so you are ready to go.
