Lake of the Woods Original Weekly Fishing Report!

There is a bit of congestion on the lake this year

There is a bit of congestion on the lake this year.  With other lakes having poor ice conditions, Lake of the Woods is covered with more fish houses than ever before.

Fishing has been good. We moved out to about 6 miles north of Pine Island, away from the big school of smaller Saugers, and are catching larger fish, although not as many. So far the increased traffic on the lake hasn’t affected the bite. We’re optimistic that it will hold out and we can continue to move further away from the chaos.

Every week we try to say what color is doing best. If you’ve had the pleasure of fishing Lake of the Woods before, you know that gold and glow colors are always effective, and a lure with a rattle is always a good choice.  For those of you who are looking forward to your first trip to the Walleye Capital of the World, remember gold, glow, rattles and you can’t go wrong with a Rippin’ Rap or two.  That’s the best presentation for the dark, stained waters of Lake of the Woods. Changing up your lure once in a while doesn’t hurt but if you find something that’s working well, stick with it.

The forecast shows the mercury will be jumping up and down some this coming week.  Look for highs in the 20’s and lows in the teens.
